Ellen Cappard is a watercolor artist with a practice deeply connected to her West African- Liberian heritage. Cappard uses vintage photographs, personal family member’s photos , and motifs of cultural relevance to convey a colorful story. Cappard is inspired by growing up in America and being culturally submerged in Liberian daily connections. Her works frequently explore folklore stories, personal memories that are forgotten or overlooked, while celebrating the connections.

Artist Statement
The stories I create share a sense of wonder and imagination for children that normally do not see themselves as protagonists exploring the world. Representation is important for all children, especially children in minority communities. It is my goal to share stories that connect with the joys, wonders, excitement and imagination of all children from the lens of their experience. It is imperative for minorities to have pride in their culture and their stories and see themselves as a part of the world they live in.
