“In a time where our bodies have become casualty of political ideals, I use art to reflect, imagine and explore the internal world of women. As a Black woman, I see myself first. I experience this womanhood as a Black Woman, so I pull from this within all of us.”

- Ellen Cappard

Creating works reflective of women's inner world that fuels how the woman shows up in the outer world. A reflection on interpersonal relationships in my life, observations of daily actions, and cultural responses to this inner / outer world balance. I respond with 13 pieces that amalgamate my reflections and observations with African folklore.

The primary figure is Mami Wata; a mythical creatures that hold the power of the ocean and transformation. Both celebrated and feared for their freedom and command of the water and all of its creatures. A charming goddess archetype, yet flawed and heavily influenced by her emotion.

Symbols, postures, and patterns from Ancient Kemetic faith as well as Adinkra symbols are infused with every piece. A nod to the IFE  goddess Yemi Ya is present, with cowrie shells and veils as a sign of divinity in the shimmering water. Images are highlighting the day with the sun, the moon at night, as well as the deep emotional connection to nature in the water.

Each of the created 13 pieces of art reflect this concept in watercolor painting and ink. The watercolors are done on 5X7 inches cotton handmade paper. The paper is iridescent, soft textured, water soluble with natural edges. Each piece is framed in wood with float mounting and professional assembly for a finished size of 12.5 x 14.5 inches. They are primed for professional gallery hanging.
